Professional IT Resume Writing Services: FAQ

I've been in business a whole lot longer than most professional IT resume writing services

I've been an IT resume writer since 2010, in fact. My site has grown in that time—and continues to grow—so I felt it was time to answer some of the questions that I frequently hear from prospective clients in one place. Feel free, of course, to follow the links to get more information, or reach out to set up an initial conversation (of course, completely free of charge).

1) Do you use AI resume writing?

Never—absolutely never. AI has many uses and values; I'll use it for brainstorming business or other ideas. But I won't use AI for writing copy. There are a number of reasons for that, but primarily, it’s because an IT resume is, and must be, a fully human document—a document that communicates one human being's career to another human being.

AI can’t capture an IT professional’s career or value proposition effectively—nor does AI have the intuition to make the necessary choices on language, style, and impact.

2) Will you write me an ATS optimized resume?

Of course! But that’s less important than you may have heard. “ATS optimized resume” has become something of a sales gimmick for the resume mills; any well written IT resume will be ATS optimized.

More importantly, I write resumes than optimized for human readers—because it’s the human reader who will decide to call you.

3) Do you work with international IT professionals?

Absolutely! I've written IT resumes for clients in the US, Canada, Uruguay, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Jordan, Singapore, and the Philippines—and I understand the subtle cultural differences that impact IT resumes and IT job searches in different countries.

4) I know a lot of professional IT resume services aren't full time. What about you?

I've been making my living exclusively by writing IT resumes for more than 15 years, so yes, this is my full-time gig.

That said, I'm more than "just" an IT resume writer—I see myself as an end-to-end partner with my clients to help them advance in their IT career path.

That’s why I provide Tech Career Coaching in addition to writing IT resumes. I don’t leave my clients stranded once I’ve delivered the documents. I’ll work with my clients every step of the way to help them in their IT career path.

5) How many people are in your team?

Well, there's me. I do work with a proofreader, but beyond that, I'm a one-person shop. That means you'll be working with me—and only me—from our first call through project sign-off. Of course, I'm also websmaster, marketing director, VP of business development...

In the great Western, The Man who Shot Liberty Valance, James Stewart introduces the man who runs the town newspaper as editor, publisher, and chief writer. The publisher gets up and says, "I also sweep out the place." That's the life of an entrepreneur.

6) What's the best IT resume package for me?

The majority of my clients are best served by my Gold Packages. That includes IT resume, LinkedIn profile, and two hours of tech career coaching that I include at no charge.

7) Are resume writing services worth it?

Yes—but only if you pick the right one. There is a huge range of skill, cost, experience, and value in the resume writing industry.

A great resume writing service can transform your career—and make the job search easier, faster, and less stressful. But a bad one? At best can be a waste of money. At worst, a bad resume service can harm your career.

So it’s well worth the time to explore multiple resume writing services. The questions here—questions I often hear from prospective clients—can be a good way to frame conversations with the resume writing service.

As an ACRW-certified writer with 15+ years focused solely on IT? I know that the investment in my services can generate very strong ROI.

8) Why are you more expensive than other professional IT resume writing services?

I take far more time than most IT resume writers on every project. I work directly with every client. I ask my clients to do little to no homework.

But fundamentally? I've developed a lot of skill—both in asking questions to dig into my client's careers— and in writing the best IT resumes possible. And since I write one (top-flight) resume in the time many writers will write 10 or 15 mediocre resumes, my rates are higher. You get what you pay for—but with a five figure boost in salary in a new job? I think the ROI is mighty clear.

I discuss that in detail on my home page. and my process page.

9) You interview your clients. That's different than most professional IT resume writing services, right?

Yes, as far as I know, I'm the only IT resume writer who uses an interview process exclusively to gather data—no worksheets, no questionnaires. Since worksheets aren't interactive, it's not a good strategy to dig deeply into my client's IT career path. Beyond that, my approach to interviewing includes coaching. The best compliment I’ve ever received after an interview was hearing, “JM, I’ve never seen my career so clearly before!”

10) That's great, but how can you really get an idea of my IT career in a two-hour interview?

Part of is natural talent—I've always asked a lot of questions (something that did not endear me to many teachers in grade school and high school).

But I've honed that talent into a skill—so I'm able to ask questions that help my clients better understand their tech careers—and give me information for the resume that they may not have even been aware of.

11) Do you subcontract to other IT resume writers?

Never. Every word you receive from me is written by me.

12) What is involved in your tech career coaching?

My approach to tech career coaching is client-driven. Different clients are looking for different things.

However, a significant number of my clients are interested in job search coaching (especially if they haven't looked for a new job in awhile), interview coaching, and broader career strategy questions.

13) Have you written an IT resume for someone exactly like me?

I have written IT resumes for professionals in the vast majority of IT and technology disciplines—and at all levels from senior executive to early career. I have also written IT resumes for professionals in most industry verticals—from big tech to finance to healthcare, to manufacturing—and many more.

However, I do, from time to time, get a really arcane project for a professional in a very niche area. I'm happy to say that, in my two most recent projects of this sort, I've helped my clients get interviews—and offers—with Google, Siemens, and Nvidia.

So the bottom line is that I know my field, and know how to write a technical resume across a range of both common and less common disciplines. You don't have to worry about that.

14) Are you certified?

I am—I hold the ACRW certification from the Resume Writing Academy. The ACRW is the most demanding and rigorous certification course in the industry—and demonstrates a strong command of resume writing best practices.

15) How did you get started as an IT resume writer? Were you an engineer?

I’m not a former engineer. My ex-wife was a developer; I wrote her IT resume—she got interviews and the resume got compliments. The rest, as they say, is history.

16) Why “Quantum Tech? Do you only work with Quantum Computing?”

When I started my business - back in 2009/2010, I wanted to name it “Quantum Resumes.” That was taken at the time, so a friend suggested “Quantum Tech Resumes.” It was long before Quantum existed - though of course, I can help professionals in the quantum computing field.

17) What should I call you? JM?

Yes. This confuses everyone. My name is John-Michael, but I've gone by "J.M." for a very long time.
